Fluther Request: Chat Room Link?

Asked by pjanaway (3002points) December 14th, 2009

I know Fluther has a chat room, and I know it is often empty most of the time (due to the fact no one can find the location of it :)), but do you guys as a whole think the link to the room should be easily accessed by adding it to the top menu somewhere (rather than just located on the “contact us” page?)

I’m mainly asking because recently when the chat room link for the AB newbies was listed at the top of the site, it was being used, had alot of members inside etc. And it didn’t slow down the amount of questions being asked still.

Should it be added?

Here is the AB Chat link.

The regular chat room link can be found on the Unofficial Fluther Wiki

I wrote a greasemonkey to do this.

It requires Firefox and the Greasemonkey extension and can be found here.

AHHHH, thats not what I’m asking.. lol, I’m asking if a link should be added to the top menu!

Where it says “home” “my account” “blog” “contact” :)

@johnpowell – something like that but I was asking if everyone could see it!

I bothered the masters of the fluthernet about it. :)

They will not add a link until they write a room that ties into our user accounts. Don’t hold your breathe. I have been waiting for over two years.

Ah fair enough :’(

I was only wondering because They had the link at the top for the AB’ers for a couple days, and the questions have been flowing perfectly fine even with a chat room option. :)

@pjanaway In the past, there have been problems with trolls and the public availability of the chat room. It was so bad at one point that people were recommended to ask a moderator for the link (kind of like a secret handshake). This situation has seemingly resolved itself, so perhaps moving forward it could be more obvious.

The room is currently locked due to some asshole. It will be unlocked shortly.

@johnpowell maybe we should come up with some alternatives to the campfire chat and present them to bendrewim?

@phoenyx What do you mean? No commercial alternative would tie into user accounts unless Bendrewin make it.

Maybe they are working on it. I remember Tim saying something about have to fry big fish on the website. Chat is a pretty big fish indeed.

I was thinking more along the lines of going out and looking at various xmpp/irc/whatever chat options, seeing how well you could integrate something like that into a website, and present the findings to our fluther overlords.

They may already have something in the works.

If the only problem is finding one that can be used with the usernames on the website, then that problem is easily solved, you can already get open source scripts which can be integrated into a user system of a website.

@phoenyx :: I have one that works well and allows IP bans. Maybe it is time to use it. I’m just not sure how the server would handle the load.
