just a guess…

Viet Cong >>> VC >>> Victor Charlie >>> Charlie

The Viet Cong turned into “the VC,” which turned into “Victor Charlie” which eventually turned into just “Charlie.”

edit: missed it by that much

Hmmm…I always thought it was some odd resemblance to Charlie Brown :\ that certainly makes it more of a slur, imo…
