Unfortunately I have to work until 10.30pm tonight so there will be no pancakes for me :( usually I like them with lots of sugar though.

I can’t stand pancakes personally, but I have fun making them with my daughter and husband, we made them one year on a camping stove as we were having a new kitchen fitted and the old oven was sold before the new one fitted!! That’s how dedicated my daughter is to pancakes!! She loves them with chocolate sauce, my hubby prferes them wit sugar and lemon the traditional way?

Pancake day?! There is a pancake day?! NUMMY!!!! You just planned my whole day, not just my evening! This morning I will start with making a monster sized baked apple cinnamon pancake.

According to this recipe, American and English pancakes look pretty much the same.

Pancake day is Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. It is also the first day of Lent, according to Wikipedia, which seems weird to me since pancakes don’t seem like fasting.

However, not being a Christian, it all looks like good fun to me. But I wonder where the Mardi Gras parade is. There is usually one in my neighborhood, but I guess it’s usually on the Saturday before or after the actual day. Maybe I missed it. Although it would be very difficult to have a parade right now, with all the snow lying around and the streets so damned slippery!

The idea is that you get rid of all your rich food the day before you start fasting so your cupboards are bare, ready for the fasting period! Removing temptationa dn all that! Panakes here are usually made from eggs, milk and flour and are cooked in a frying pn with a little oil!
Then eaten with lemon and sugar!

Oh man, living in Australia I’ve already missed it! I can’t believe it’s Shrove Tuesday already, it always comes around so quickly each year. Maybe I should just have pancakes tomorrow.

I am having Ice Cream Sundays with the Cub Scouts tonight…maybe I’ll cook up some pancakes and put ice cream on them and lots of chocolate syrup…yum!

@Dibley You might find this interesting. Women in Liberal, Kansas race against women in Olney, England. They run down the street flipping pancakes. Silly, but it’s cute.

Thanks – I’d never heard of pancake day. Maybe I’ll make pancakes for lunch. But for dinner we’re having the pulled pork I cooked in the crock pot overnight.

I want these!! They look more like candy than pancakes. And real maple syrup is a must, I’d rather have just butter than fake maple syrup.

I agree completely @fireinthepriory. My grandfather used to make real maple syrup so I grew up with the real stuff. I’d rather have applesauce, fruit, whipped cream or just butter than fake syrup.

It isn’t pancake day where I live. It’s a day for Paczki here. Same idea though, use up the flour, sugar fat before Lent begins.

@Adirondackwannabe I’ve never had maple syrup. I think that is maybe because your pancakes are thick and so might need that extra something? Whereas ours are light and thin and don’t need much.

Pancakes must have real Maple syrup in my world.
I sometimes tap my trees and make my own.

I just had french toast. I’m terrible. I like them so much more than pancakes. I suppose if I had pancakes they’d be banana chocolate chip, with whipped cream.

@Dibley Ours are a little thicker, but maple syrup is one of mother nature’s greatest gifts. We use it on ice cream as well.The climate is a major issue. Temps have to be below freezing. Now you’ve made me drool.

@Dibley I’m completely nonreligious, so you couldn’t offend me. Usually there is a tie in it to some traditions and something religious.

We just might have pancakes for dinner, because I just realized I didn’t thaw anything out. I make them from scratch with either real maple syrup (can’t stand the fake stuff) or homemade cinnamon syrup.

@Adirondackwannabe and @Dibley Pancake Day is also called Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday, the last day before the beginning of Lent. It’s basically Mardi Gras – one last feast before you start fasting for Lent.

@Adirondackwannabe Read the above answers, they are right, it is the lent thing. An ex colleague of mine cuts out no end for lent, she is very religious, she’s really sweet, always says she’ll pray for me.

@Adirondackwannabe I just eat ‘em for the fun of it, too. :) My mom is very religious though, when I was young I used to be a pancake maker at her church’s Mardi Gras dinner. One year we hid tiny plastic Baby Jesuses in between the stacks of pancakes. It was a hilarious idea in theory, but less great when you realized they were roughly the same color as the pancakes and several people ended up chomping on Baby Jesus by accident, to the detriment of both their morale and their teeth. Whoops!

@Dibley I have friends that are very religious, so I get some exposure to it. I’m more of the throw my carcass in the ground and let the worms eat well category.

I love having some pancakes with my maple syrup! ;) Even better with blackberries on top.

a couple of good stiff drinks

I’m in a meetup group of British expats in NYC; they’re having a pancake-throwing contest at a pub tonight. It’s karate night for me, though, so I won’t be going.

Maybe I will have pancakes for supper with a little powdered sugar and lingonberry jam and do a bit of carb-loading before I go to class! ;)
