Congratulations! You've just won an all-expenses-paid round-trip in a time machine! When do you go?

Asked by Nullo (22009points) February 24th, 2010

Included in the package are all the things that a citizen of that period would be expected to have, like money, clothes, etc. and a briefing on the target cultural norms and expectations, so don’t worry ‘bout those.

The first thing I would do is visit Jesus Crist I would ask him for guidence. I would pour my heart out to help.

janbb's avatar

Do you mean when or where?

phoebusg's avatar

Convince every person in history to cherish the arts and science – and to avoid war. Of course, by shining lasers and doing ‘magic’ :P

Vunessuh's avatar

Flagstaff, Arizona in 1912.

Berserker's avatar

The Victorian era, so then I could wear puffy dresses and lounge around drinking brandy all evening.

evandad's avatar

The early 70’s. Great music. I was in my twenties. Pre AIDS and post sexual revolution.

gailcalled's avatar

@Symbeline: Throw in corsets, male domination, no real education for women, and perhaps ending up in the servant class rather than upstairs. Ladies drank sherry unless they had the vapors or hysteria.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I’ll go now to December 2009 and say a few things very differently.

Berserker's avatar

@gailcalled Haha I know. It was probably pretty horrible, but then maybe a vampire could come and whisk me away. >_>

Wait…

holden's avatar

To Friday evening, when my physics, calculus, and linear algebra exams will be over with.

noyesa's avatar

I’d probably wind up in the middle ages having to battle against Lord Arthur’s men to get the Necronomicon and escape back to my own time using nothing but a sawed off shotgun and a chainsaw.

“Hail to the King, baby!”

phil196662's avatar

Sunol, California. 1890’s so I could see the railroads in there hayday and see Charlie Chapman’s silent films first hand and see the bay area without all the bridges…

Captain_Fantasy's avatar

Next week to get the winning lottery numbers in advance.

Jude's avatar

Easy. Eight years back. My Mom retired from work then and she was having the time of her life. This way, I’d be able to spend more time with her and we could’ve gone on our Alaskan trip.

holden's avatar

Forgot to mention chemistry.

CMaz's avatar

I would ride it back to the last time this question was asked. ;-)

But I will say it again. Nothing before penicillin.

Jude's avatar

@ChazMaz Ha! I was going to say that.

Pseudonym's avatar

@janbb I believe he means what time would you go to?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I’d like to go back to yesterday…before I ate all that bran ;)

janbb's avatar

@Pseudonym I do too, but the imprecision bothers me.

I would like to go back to Regency England but only if I could be Jane Austen or Beau Brummell.

Shecky_Johnson's avatar

To the 50’s to watch the birth and evolution of Rock & Roll.

@holden If you leave now to go to then, Your tests would not be taken by you, right? You weren’t there. just sayin’

Nullo's avatar

@phoebusg
It’s a round-trip. You get to go one place/time, and return.

CMaz's avatar

“I’d like to go back to yesterday…before I ate all that bran ;)”

No whey!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ChazMaz -Lol! Sometimes it’s just nice to re-live those special moments ;)

CyanoticWasp's avatar

I will have already gone. Can I went again?

Many of the events and places I’d like to experience from, say, c. 1750–1955, I’d need something to turn me into a white person, and probably male at that, so I wouldn’t be mistaken for a servant/slave/prostie, except for a rent party where Billie Holiday might be singing in the 30s or a night out at the Savoy during the Harlem Renaissance.

Were I capable to be perceived as a middle-class person, I’d go to Regency England; Bath in particular, or NYC in the early 1800s. I’d like to see what sort of wooded areas my former UWS apartments were built on.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

I’d go back to the signing of the U.S. Constitution and go talk to the Founders. I’d ask them if they meant the Constitution to be static, or if they intended it to evolve over time. In other words, are “originalist” Supreme Court justices like Antonin Scalia correct, or are the ones who favor a “Living Constitution” (like Oliver Wendell Holmes or Stephen Breyer)?

TexasDude's avatar

1860–1959ish.

I would be most interested in visiting/studying/partaking in/observing:

-The American Civil War
-My great-great-great grandpappy around 1890ish when he was serving in the Italian Army
-WWI and II
-The beginnings of the Cold War

I would go to now…. and enjoy the paid vacation

AstroChuck's avatar

Last week so that I can get my credit card bill out on time.

Fred931's avatar

Everywhere where I could have said something that would abruptly screw things up in the present.

lonelydragon's avatar

@evandad Count me in! That’s exactly what I was going to say (although, alas, I never got to experience that time period firsthand).

TheLoneMonk's avatar

I would load the machine with food, water, (please don’t think I’m going on a humanitarian mission because you’d be disappointed in me…) beer, ice, rain gear and head back to Max Yasgur’s farm and sit back for some incredible music. Give away my food and rain gear. Introduce (and use) the condoms and sell my beer and ice. Ahhhh….Woodstock. After three days I’d hop back in el timo machineo and head home….

semblance's avatar

I would go back to late December 2005 and fix the one mistake I will otherwise regret for the rest of my life, which was not recognizing that a life was in danger and could probably have been saved if I had taken appropriate action.

babaji's avatar

have to go to 2013, maybe in the summertime to see what the world is like after the world ended in 2012…lol
no actually lets go to 2050 and i could check back and see when Social Security ran out…

Christian95's avatar

I’ve said this before but..
First I’d like to meet Albert Einstein than I’d like to go see Jesus to find out if he really was a God or just an impostor(maybe I’ll have to surprise to see that he didn’t even existed?

Nullo's avatar

@Christian95 Sorry, but it’s got to be one or the other :P.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I leave the day after tomorrow…....for Woodstock in ‘69.

candide's avatar

Ah, the Age of Enlightenment, the best of all possible worlds, maybe a peep into Pepys’, a voyage with Banks in the HMB Endeavour, a trip to the Continental Congress in 1776, look in on Robespierre as he has a bath…. loads of fun!

…or I could just go back when and meet myself and say, “don’t have that third margarita!”

mattbrowne's avatar

The real Jurassic Park. But I’d take a couple of well-trained marines with me.

stevenb's avatar

I would video tape many of the current events of the present. Then I’d head back to meet Jesus and get his opinion on all of this, and also see what he thinks of the fuss people make about him. I’d hang out with him and see what he was really like and just talk all week. Maybe video tape his answers and bring the video back with me to show the present what he was all about. I wonder what that would be like!

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@stevenb Certain religious factions wouldn’t believe you, as what he really said probably differs greatly from their interpretations of it.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

I went tomorrow, and I’m going to go again yesterday.

aprilsimnel's avatar

It’s beginning to and back again.

Or is that a Wire record?

stevenb's avatar

@Dr. Dredd, that’s why I want to record what he says. I also think people use his words by their own interpretation and ideals.

PacificToast's avatar

Jesus time, then Victorian England.

WMFlight's avatar

I would want to go back to be with my mother the day she died.
