My mom and I have the same bra size, but she is bigger in her breast size. How does that work?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) March 22nd, 2010

I won’t go into deep details but she and I have the same size, but physically her breasts are way bigger.
How are we the same size?

More tissue. Or one of you is wearing the wrong size. Or you wear different brands that have different definitions of your size. By bra size do you mean the band and the cup or just one or the other. There is a certain amount of “error” allowed in sizing – it is not a precise scale, rather there is a range. You can have a small B or a large B and still be a B.

Your torso maybe wider than hers.

Hasn’t it got to do with the broadness of your backs as well.Just one guy talking forgive me if i’ve boobed.

@njnyjobs @ucme When she says “same size” I assume she means same band size and cup size because both are required to buy a bra that fits, in which case the broadness of their back or their torso width is insignificant as they are the same.

@chyna Well hardly forever i am a little distracted here throw me a freaking bone.

There really isn’t any kind of a universal standard in the industry, is there? with cigars, one man’s churchill can be another man’s londsdale, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

lilikoi's avatar

Band size is pretty standard. I’ve seen significant variation in cup size across brands.

@lilikoi Ahh that’s me put right then.Phew i’m outta here thanks.

@ucme What exactly is distracting you?

I think a lot of the issue can be breast shape. We’re not all perfect grapefruits. A bra cup is meant to hold a certain number of ounces and mold the breast into an attractive shape. A narrow, long breast can have the same mass as a wider, flatter breast.

@Seek_Kolinahr has the best answer.

Ha ha ha… yes, @bob_ we’re talking about boobies.

Perhaps one of you isn’t the size they think they are.

I worked in the clothing industry a long time ago, but I realized I didn’t have anything to offer this question other than speculation- I certainly have no “hands on” experience, so to speak.

@Seek_Kolinahr : so making a standard would be hella hard, then. thanks for reminding me. Question answered, thank you.

@Seek_Kolinahr : Oh… that makes more sense. She is a lot longer, haha.

Anyone else weired out that @troubleinharlem is so comfortable talking about the size/shape of her mother’s boobs? I really can’t imagine comparing the length/girth of my father’s unmentionables with my own… it would just be too creepy to think about (I was immaculately conceived after all).

bob_'s avatar

@gorillapaws I’d actually like to high-five somebody.

troubleinharlem's avatar

@gorillapaws : haha, I wasn’t, actually. I was really apprehensive about the whole thing. xD And besides, breasts aren’t as… well, I don’t know, erotic as penises. But that’s just my opinion.

Hmm, after much investigation, I determined I need a picture to work with. Sorry, I’m a visual learner.

I encourage students to ask questions and one 15 yo decided to put me to the test by asking me in open class to explain bra size. This is how I answered him

Both band size and cup size are variable. For example a 34B. The 34 is the measurement around the chest at the base of the breasts. It only makes sense that most women are not an even number of inches. Bra bands usually run +/- an inch with 2 or 3 rows of hooks so a 34 is a 33½–34½.

The cup size represents the difference in the band size and the breast size. That too is variable so that the cup adjusts, sometimes with the aid of elastic.

Q: My mom and I have the same bra size, but she is bigger in her breast size. How does that work?

A: Baby’s Got Back.

She probably use her secret method/product. She might won’t tell you if you ask. But you can also find other helpful product(try specially modified bra,breast booster cream,breast massager,etc. You can try breast injection if you want).

JeffVader's avatar

One, or most likely, both of you, are wearing the wrong bra size. I remember reading that something like 1 in 3 women are wearing the wrong size bra.

galileogirl's avatar

If there is a gap where the strap meets the cup cup size is too big. If you have double bubble overflow, the cup is too small.

gorillapaws's avatar

@galileogirl “double bubble overflow” doesn’t sound so bad to me…

chyna's avatar

@gorillapaws I’m guessing you’re a man.

JeffVader's avatar

@galileogirl Hah… ‘double bubble overflow’ thats the first time ive heard that expression, thank you :)
