What is the purpose of rhyme. Why is it (it's been said) that it's a return to the keynote.

Originally, like meter, it was a mnemonic device to help you remember the poem.

As people got more literate, it became another expressive device.

That’s exactly what i was going to say. Before the invention of the printing press tales, songs, everything had to be committed to memory if it was going to survive.
