What should I use to whiten my teeth?

Asked by Gruz06 (811points) March 26th, 2008

I’m looking for a way to whiten my teeth, but I don’t know how to go about doing it. Should I go for the “Zoom” technique or the toothpaste and whitening strips?

I have a box of Crest Whitestrips… but every time I close my mouth with them on, the strips slide off, and it’s probably one of the most annoying things I’ve encountered in a while. Also, the bleach stuff makes my mouth all watery, and I frequently have to spit (or swallow), which results in the strips sliding off, yet again.

Anyone else have this problem too?

The do it yourself products are fairly effective and definitely affordable (according to various articles I’ve read). The down side is that they can cause tooth sensitivity.

The most effective professional system is a process that uses a stronger peroxide and laser enhancement. It is very effective but expensive.

brushing with baking soda.

@chat – I know what you mean. The best solution I’ve found to the ‘falling off’ problem is to dry your teeth off a bit prior to placing the strips. The Crest strips seem to adhere better when there’s less saliva.

I’ve used everything from the strips to the trays and by far the best results I’ve seen was from the Crest whitening rinse mouth wash. I was amazed by how well it worked considering how much cheaper and faster the process is.

The easiest and most effective way is to have a dentist do it. It will cost you some bucks, though.

I read somewhere that a mixture of strawberries and baking soda would whiten your teeth. Just brush your teeth with the mixture at most once every 2 weeks.

Baking soda and prexoide ocassionally. Brushing with baking soda too often will strip your enamel.

Brushing with baking soda will whiten your teeth but the damage it can cause to your enamel may not be worth it in the long run. Apply peroxide to a qtip and whiping your teeth will help but be careful not to to that more than once every few weeks or you can give yourself thrush.

Also, once you do whiten your teeth, try drinking staining stuff through a straw. That will help keep your pearlies whiter longer.
