  Why are terms like "Dear", "Hon", or "God Bless you" considered offensive?

  I’m fine with elderly ladies and waitresses calling me Hon’ as long as I can tell they’re not being sarcastic. Not so keen on men calling me Sweetie and Hon, except the occasional innocent old geezer.

  What would be some nice, soothing (and distracting!) music to listen to while in labor?

  My daughter was born in 1990 and I listened to A Circle Is Cast by Libana pretty much all the way through. It’s kind of goddessy – accapella women singing gorgeous harmonies – might not be what you’re looking for, but it was perfect for me. Here and here are links to sites that will let you hear a few samples. My daughter still loves to listen to it.

  Can you kill whatever popped your jam (botulism?) through cooking or freezing?

  The botulism spores are not dangerous It’s the paralytic toxins produced by the spores under the right wrong circumstances. For home canners, it’s usually low acid foods that aren’t heated to a high enough temperature for long enough. If the spores survive the canning process, they start producing the toxin in the airless environment of the sealed jar/can. Foods contaminated with botulism toxin can look normal and smell normal. The best way to be safe is to use pressure canning techniques for meats and low acid foods. I speak as the daughter of a long time “open kettle method” canner who survived despite my mother’s resistance to those new fangled scientific warnings.

  What's a practical gift (or two) that you would like for Christmas?

  My husband got me a Jiffy steamer a couple of years ago for my birthday after some well placed hints, and it’s hard to imagine doing without now. I more-or-less stopped ironing years ago, but now you can’t tell, because the wrinkles steam away so nicely. Be careful of cheap imitations, some of them spit on the clothes and are more trouble than they’re worth. In the stocking stuffer category, I’m always happy to get natural lip balms. And socks. And chocolate

  What's the difference between a "personal boundary" and a "putting up a wall"?

  You mentioned your “spidey sense”. Maybe it would help to visualize that like one of those invisible dog fences? Not to take that anaolgy too far, but you’ve got that to protect you, so it’s OK to let yourself be seen and to interact with others, knowing that you’ll be able to use your power to call a halt when someone crosses the line. When you have a solid fence up, you can’t see the view or be seen by others.
