My avatar is my dog, Piper, looking all cute and stuff – from her first camping trip last summer.
I live in Alberta, Canada ..where I was born and raised. I have been with my partner for 12 years. We have one dog, four cats, one fish, and one shrimp.
I’m vegetarian – for about 20 years now. My most cherished hobbies are drawing, woodworking, music, dancing, writing, reading, gaming, cycling, swimming and camping.
I am quite knowledgable in animals (including humans). I have a passion for animal and human behaviour. I also have a passion for human cultures and societies – past and present. In college, I majored in Psychology and Anthropology. I minored in Religious Studies, Women’s Studies and Archaeology.
I ask that you please have patience with me. My brain is not what it used to be (details below). I am very intelligent but it can take longer for me put my thoughts into words. The knowledge is there, it’s just a bit scrambled. I could sit and write a couple paragraphs before I finally start making sense. I’m always working on it. Do not be surprised if you see you me crafting a response for a long time. I’m constantly rereading and changing my words before I actually post.
Up until a few years ago, I had been suffering multiple brain tumours for about 8 years. When the doctors first told me, they gave me about 6 months to live (maximum). Since then, I’ve had so many surgeries that I lost count. I have one tumour left that seems to be dormant – it’s also in a tight space for surgeons to get at. I had finished college during the first year of illness. After that, I was not allowed to do anything that would get my blood pumping fast. I basically sat around for 7 years – usually bald or really short hair. I gained some weight during that process – a lot of comfort food too. I’ve been working on it, on and off, for the last year. Getting there.
Update: I quit smoking on Feb. 14, 2013!
I love nature and animals. I am currently taking a Zookeeping course to work in my city’s zoo. I’d love to work with great apes or elephants. I’m entering the workforce rather late in life (career-wise) and hope that will get my foot in the door working with animals. My dream job is to run an animal rescue facility and/or work on wildlife/environmental conservation.
I’d love to travel the world some day. I also want to work towards trading the city life for the country life ..some day. I just have to convince my partner.
I enjoy people who are funny, compassionate, respectful, genuine, honest, open-minded and thoughtful. I like people who stop to smell the flowers in life and enjoy the little things.
People describe me as intelligent, funny, silly, reserved, gentle, quiet, shy, compassionate, intuitive, perceptive, creative, curious, polite and determined. I am extremely quiet and shy until you get to know me (which means I trust you). I am told I have an old soul but I’m young at heart.
I am Plucky in every sense of the word. I’ve been through a tremendous amount of hardships in my life. I am lucky to still be me at the end of the day. My determination knows no bounds.
Some of my favourite quotes:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”
~ Mahatma Gandhi
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”
~ Maya Angelou
If I still have your attention ..thank you for taking the time to read a bit about me. :)
