  What message can I put in this Christmas Card?

  I would send him one card every few days with a either a collection of messages that make one sentence “I am really proud of you” or parts from a story so that he can look forward to the next one. I’d bombard him with them!

  I need ideas for what to do with/for my grand children this Christmas.

  I would start a tradition and have everyone gets dressed up for a night out at a holiday play, or tree-lighting ceremony – then get hot cocoa afterward. You can start to do something now that becomes ‘your thing’ together that doesn’t have to be expensive, but they can look forward to every year. This also frees their parents up to go Christmas shopping. As for gifts, I’d just stick with the simple, classic and basic. Again, choose one thing that can be ‘your thing’ like, they get a coat, or an educational toy, or a special necklace. This takes their expectations out of the stratosphere as a child and then helps them appreciate the ‘collection’ you’ve gotten them as they get older. My grandmother used to get me 5 or so magazine subscriptions that I loved. It was a reminder that she was thinking of me every month, and now when I look back, I’m glad she got me educational items rather than trendy junk toys.

  Has anyone really studied ebay?

  @galileogirl: I never buy tech at all, like computers but I have to say that I look at it much differently than this. I see it more as an exchange of goods that optimizes the supply and demand of world-wide exposure, rather than getting rich on trash. I don’t see antiques, vintage items or anything else I’m interested in as trash, per se but more like a big, electronic estate sale. I guess that all depends on your personal definition of trash, though. I guess I consider myself a little bit of a cultural anthropologist and love elements of physical culture so I’ve been fascinated and thrilled with the things I’ve found – particularly if I’ve been able to give them as gifts. I do sometimes wonder where supply comes from but I also only buy from reputable sources. I think many sellers with new items are offloading someone’s overstock or getting last season’s goods cheaply. It just sounds like estate sales, thrifting or shopping for the thrill of it aren’t your thing – which may be why the magic that can often be buying or selling on Ebay seems so elusive…
