The stone emerald is called ”σμαράγδι” (smarAgdi) but the female name has the stress in the end (smaragdEE). Also, the “d” is not really a D, but sounds like “th” in “there”. So it’s “smaragthi” for the stone and “smaragthee” for the girl.
My friend is called “Smaragda” which is just another form of the name, but I actually call her “Emerald” (in English, even when we speak in Greek).
