Can a "sex buddy" ever STAY a "sex buddy?"?

Yes, but only if you two want the same thing. Once someone wants more than just sex, the situation gets messier than jizz on dark sheets. Btw, your question makes me think of something I read recently about “intimacy lite” (link). Might be of interest to you.
