  Why do you wear white undies?

  It’s probably a common color because white underwear (and t-shirts and socks) can be bleached without fading. Obviously, these are the dirtiest and most germ-infested pieces of clothing for most people.

  Giving up dairy, any suggestions or expereinces?

  I know this is an old question, but I’m lactose intolerant and I gave up dairy relatively easily a few years ago. I used to drink tall glasses of whole milk every day and eat lots and lots of pizza. Surprisingly, it wasn’t too hard to give it up, and I’ve had pretty good success maintaining it. However, I was motivated because lactose would make me sick. What emilyrose said about soy is interesting, and I would add that a naturopathic doctor told me that men in particular should avoid soy products because of that estrogen effect. I think it’s less of a concern for women though. One thing I recently discovered is that Cabot-brand aged cheddar (and aged cheddar in general) is completely lactose free, so that has brought some dairy joy back into my life. Sorry, that was a rambling answer – not an uncommon thing here on Fluther!

  What is the most inexpensive way to go Gorilla tracking in Central/East Africa?

  i went to see the ugandan gorillas in 1999, but paid for it as part of a “gorilla” safari through a travel agency in cape town, south africa. i forget how much the trip cost via the agency, but i remember that we had to pay an additional US $500 in CASH to the ugandan government once we met up with the trackers (this was known ahead of time, when we booked the trip). you can probably roll into kampala, uganda without any plans ahead of time, then just ask around for trackers, but you’d probably run a much higher risk of getting ripped off. plus, i’m pretty sure you’ll still have to pay that $500 (or more now). I understand this is a primary source of income for the Ugandan government.

  Which small (pocket-sized) digital cameras are good with clear low-light no-flash shots?

  the ones with the lowest f-numbers (this is what “faster” means). these folks are right about the high ISOs, but the higher the ISO you use for a given scene, the grainier the image will be. i would just compare the f-numbers of the cameras out there and pick the one with the lowest. you will see that these are probably the most expensive, however…

  What fabrics are best for upholstered furniture in a house full of cats?

  one observation i’d like to add is that cats don’t seem to like to scratch at my couch, which is made of microfiber. microfiber feels and looks a little like suede. it has to do with the thickness of the strands and the tightness of the weave. they can’t get their claws into it with any kind of satisfaction. i imagine it’d be pretty expensive to re-upholster with microfiber, but maybe next time you buy a couch…
