  In regards to economics, what are you?

  I believe societies would be more prosperous if wealth was not funneled upwards as it currently is – even if that allows a few people the ability to do really neat things with their power over concentrations of wealth. What we as a community do economically would be way more useful to us, far more in-line with our values & interests – if everyone who made wealth could have their fair say in how/when they worked, for what means, rather than their employers & speculators. But seeking a means to make society more prosperous is not at all what drove me to conclude we need serious restructuring of our economic system. (Was a very straight-forward matter of ethics & logic… it’s so unstable & harmful to exploit all the people our current system does; victims of profit-driven wars, the sweatshop workers who make most of our stuff, even those of us lucky enough to be able to enjoy the material fruits of all that exploitation… we don’t see much of the wealth we earn, and usually endure insecurity & lack of control over our own working conditions.) In the operative sense, at the moment my own economic activity is mostly supporting local & fair trade businesses/farms and making an effort to be thrifty, self-sufficient and environmentally responsible… using basically allowance money :-/ @squirbel I highly recommend the book Divine Right of Capital… it’s not an expose of the specific bad things a number of corporations do/have done, nor a socialist polemic, but rather a really novel angle on their basic structure, and its flaws, (plus ideas for improving them).

  What do you make of all the race and gender questions on fluther lately?

  @asmonet That works… tho, and i may be off here, but it seems ethnicity doesn’t carry with it the connotations of some groups being denied unearned advantages granted others that race does. Maybe for those who understand the biological meaninglessness and social significance of ‘ethnicity/race’/whatever, race could be used… and for those who think the social meaning stems from [non-existent] biological stuff, ethnicity would be a better term. But, how to tell what someone’s schema of the topic is?

  Do you think higher birth rates among the poor (which leads to increased scarcity and poverty) needs the same attention that global warming has gotten in recent years?

  Westerners, even tho we tend to have less kids per person, use so many times more resources – and are able to live with relative (albeit precarious) social/economic security without having any kids – that i don’t see lowering Global South birth rates to be quite as worth of attention as ensuring only those ready & able to be parents become such in this part of the world. Of course, considering the pressures of population on land and societies… less farmland, water, more strife over access to resources… it’s very much a problem. But focusing on the root of that problem, at least the one we have by far the most control over (here) – the extreme economic exploitation of the Global South by the “developed” world – seems more important, personally. Btw, @theluckiest that exploitation (mentioned above) hinders at least the workers rights and economic independence/sustainability of the ‘undeveloped’ world. And i’ve seen a number of quite inexpensive inventions, most invented in the Global South, that are more sustainable than their counterparts here. They’re not lacking ingenuity, certainly… if survival becomes less of a imminent problem, am sure it won’t be as hard as many of us assume to allow and help those elsewhere in the world ‘develop’ their societies in a way which is more sustainable than the path we took.

  My fellow browser based gamers what's your opinion on the differences between Ikariam & Travian & which one do you think you would most enjoy playing if you were to do so?

  @Kraken Helloo. It’s been too long to remember what server i played, but i believe i was a Teuton, too! Maybe never getting the hang of the ally thing is why the game didn’t hold me. If it wasn’t going to be yet another excuse to avoid imminently-due schoolwork, i’d totally re-join, tho. It takes a lot of time, building up your city there.
