Yes, you pulled me in! I think I'm gonna get addicted to fluthering, although people don't post frequently enough to make it a very time-consuming addiction. On the Tim Tang Test, Matt and I are on level 35 now, and chugging away!

His condition sounds pathological, and helping him may be out of your ken; it sound as tho you have been loving and supportive and sensible w. no luck. I worked w. kids that age for a few years and then with older teen-agers...it was easier in an Independent Day School since we had a child psychologist on staff part-time. But we could always spot the kids who needed therapy or intervention w. the family.

  Is Jack London Square in Oakland CA a good place to live?

  I was just there this morning and was thinking how charming it is getting. You have to like the industrial chic look. The square itself is pretty – near the water with all the sailboats – shops, restaurants, etc. I believe most of the housing is condos/lofts in converted warehouses. I don’t know anyone who lives there but it certainly has a nice feeling and each year gets less industrial and more charming. You also have to like the sounds of trains as they do run right past there!

  What is it like living in Berkeley, CA?

  I live in South Berkeley, near Ashby BART, and I absolutely love it. Amazing farmers’ markets year-round, bike-friendly streets, wonderful weather (as long as you’re okay with a little fog in the mornings), good schools, beautiful Tilden Park in the hills for biking, hiking, and picnicking, close to shops, countless delicious restaurants…We drove an hour and a half into San Franciso the other night for a birthday dinner at a nice restaurant that was tasty, but I left thinking there were so many more even tastier and special restaurants right here in Berkeley. The pace of life is much mellower than in San Francisco too. As far as neighborhoods, you first have to decide whether you want hills or flats. Hills will give you spectacular views and/or cozy nooks in the redwoods, but mostly higher prices and less walkable/bikeable. Flats will give you more options in pricing, more diversity of neighborhoods and people, and more shops and things in walking/biking distance. I would recommend avoiding neighborhoods too close to the UC campus, because prices will be inflated and parking is horrible. Some parts of west and south Berkeley are still transitioning (ie gentrifying) and so are still less safe at night. But there are so many great neighborhoods aside from that – the “Gourmet Ghetto” near the aforementioned Cheese Board, the Elmwood, west Berkeley near the up and coming 4th street shopping area, and my very own South Berkeley which personally I think is a great combination of good home prices, diversity, safety, and charm.

  What is an interesting 400 page non-fiction book to do a book report on?

  Not sure how many pages it is, but The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down is an amazing nonfiction read. It is about a Hmong family living in CA whose daughter has severe seizures. In their culture they believe her seizures are a sign of spiritual connection and they don’t want to treat them. In the US culture, as you might expect, all medical and social workers want the family to treat her condition. A social worker who got to know the family very well wrote the book about their saga. It’s totally engrossing.
