Ford is one of those interesting characters that I think about sometimes. Does genius excuse serious private failings such as very public antisemitism? Or since people are complex creatures full of contradictory notions, do the achievements still stand? I have never satisfactorily resolved this in my own mind. You have sparked my interest. Ford and Edison had their “winter estates” side by side near Ft. Meyers Florida. Since that’s closer for me, I might try to see those, although I don’t think they offer the interesting manufacturing aspects of the Detroit-area sites.

  @AlyxCaitlin I stand corrected. Aside from myself, one of my sons has ADD and his meds keep him charged during the day. Then he is very tired right after dinner, the medication having worn off around an hour or two earlier. Takes all kinds, I suppose

  Is there a website that will generate a single-line chart, graphing the performance of a collection of stocks over time?

  The problem you are going to have is setting a benchmark and then assigned a “weight’ to each individual stock. For example if AAPL sells at $10/Share and GOOG sells at $30/share, how do assign values as part of the valuation. Is GOOG always going to be 75% of the value of the portfolio? This is how the Dow-Jones index works. Each of the 30 stocks has a relative weighting which traces back to the original weight of each stock in the original average as calculated in what, 1892? You could chart the aggregate value of your portfolio every day using the change is total value or the change in % of value without too much trouble and I think Yahoo finance allows you to set up a portfolio with total value by stock (say, 1000 of AAPL = $10,000) so that you can track the sums daily. You also have to consider what happens if you have a stock dividend declared or you purchase 100 more shares of GOOG or sell the same, how would that affect your calculations? I would think that something like Microsoft Money would have this covered. Check around for existing software before trying to create this from scratch. SRM

  That is not what is supposed to happen. Prior to my being diagnosed with adult ADHD about 15 years ago, I was a caffeine junkie: coffee, mountain dew, a delightful southern drink called SunDrop which has more caffeine than anything else on the market, I needed the boost in order to concentrate on one thing, as opposed to bouncing around from here to there thinking I was multitasking. Same thing with all forms of methylphenidrate. Ritalin, Concerta, Vyvanse are all amphetamine based medications and you should be “up” if anything, not sleepy. Adderall also contains dexedrine which ought to be keeping you from falling asleep big-time. Are you sure you have been diagnosed correctly? A lot of physicians see depression with ADD/ADHD and will prescribe an anti-depressant to go along with Ritalin but those dosages are ordinarily not strong enough to act like you describe. Talk to your physician about this, his or her advice will be more valid than anything you read on Fluther. SRM

  You have to figure out why the items did not clear your account even if they were six months old Someone might be holding them for deposit for some unknown reason. My daughter was a college freshman, made out a check for a mission retreat and it was not cashed for almost six months. Makes no sense but it happened. If you are sure the checks will not be cashed, mark them void and remove them from your list of outstanding checks on the next reconciliation that you do. That’ll solve the problem

  Kayak8 is completely right about this., The process works like this, after a period of time, five years is more the rule, the maker of an uncashed check must file an annual report with the department of Revenue or the Secretary of State in the state where the Payee resides and must remit that amount to the state. The state holds the money until claimed and there is no time limit under which you have to file the claim. The state may NOT reduce the amount owed by any amount and neither can the maker of the check deduct anything for service or handling fees. If the $27 is owed to you, you will get $27. But the easiest way to do this is to find an address for accounts payable at the company that issued the check and simply ask for a reissue. They will ask for the stale check to be sent to them and they will reissue. Lots of checks get lost in the mail or otherwise don’t reach their proper destination. SRM
