  I need advice on answering clients requests on last minute work or even asking for creative work done over the weekend?

  When I quit my steadily-paying job in the middle of the recession and went freelance, the only part that scared my girlfriend (now wife!) was that I’d spent all weekend working. Here are the best two lessons I learned: 1) Rush fees. Give clients a financial incentive to plan their schedules. 2) Friday deadlines. I used to set schedules where I could work weekends “if I needed to”. Turns out I always needed to (until I changed deadlines to Fridays).

  Have you successfully used solar panels on your home?

  Short answer: Yes, if you own your house/have a cool landlord. Long answer: I tried this last year. The plan was to get a basic rig going, with a single panel and battery and then slowly add to it over the course of a few years. More details here: http://sunshocked.com/stanifesto/archives/going-solar Everything went great except that my landlord wasn’t cool with having panels on the roof. My first panel was up there for a few months before he noticed it (and the cable leading down the side of the building into my living room). While it worked, I was getting good juice and ran my laptop off of it. Note that this is the more DIY “off the grid” way to install solar panels. I didn’t have a “grid tie” system, where the panels fed into the building’s power and I used the regular outlets. Mine required an inverter for AC power, but was waaay cheaper.

  Sometimes whining/micromanaging clients end up making the design better afterall.

  Do you seperate HTML from code?

  For server-side code (PHP, Ruby, etc.), I don’t separate the two. I use the code to generate the HTML. To keep it organized, sometimes I use an MVC framework (as above). For client-side code (JavaScript), it becomes more important. For that I use JQuery and well-considered class names.
