How's the backpacking in May on Kuaii?

Asked by RHGMCG (8points) March 23rd, 2007
I have heard of an incredible 10-mile hike on Kuaii's Nepali coast. I'll be there around May 10, the end of the rainy season. Rumor has it that it has to be a little dry for some time to be able to do the hike comfortably. True? Is it super hard core? is it worth it if it's wet? (it's on the coast, you go up and down and up and down tropical ridges, arriving at a spot you can only get to by foot, waterfalls...i don't know the name of the trail but i think if you've been there you'll know what i'm talking about.)

I was all set to go backpacking on that very same hike last may, and then the whole island flooded. Instead, we went to Baja, rented a car in cabo, drove along the eastern coast, snorkeled, camped on the beach with the whales playing on the horizon at sunset, and ate fish tacos. So: I have no idea.

Kauai is wet almost year round, and May is likely not the driest month. There's a lot of hiking to be had, though. By your description, it sounds like you've got your eye on the Kalalau Trail. It's tough, but should still be do-able in all but the more extreme weather conditions. You'll probably hear about other, less popular "secret" trails... those are the ones I'd advise against attempting (for both safety and cultural reasons).
