What is a General Manager?

Asked by Cooldil17 (485points) March 31st, 2008

I was under the impression it was a manager who controls various stores in the area, and a general manager is below a district manager. But apparently at Panera they do things differently? So what is a general manager?

According to Wikipedia: The term general manager is a descriptive term for certain executives in a business operation. It is also a formal title held by some business executives, although the duties of the general manager role vary by industry and even from company to company.

A general manager usually has bottom-line profit and loss responsibility. That means that the buck stops there.

In the NFL he is below the owner and above the coach. Unless he holds more than one position.

A general manager is a balding middle-aged guy that drives a car that he can’t afford and acts like McDonalds is the pinnacle of your existence too.
