I was looking at this blog I found on stumbleupon, and I thought that the pictures looked fishy, but I wanted some other opinions Do you think that this is just a good shopping job or if its possible that he could have watched a whole new island form?

According to Snopes, it’s true.

We watched it happen near Iceland (through the newspapers) when Surtsey Island was born.

WOW!! That is one of the coolest, most amazing things ever! I wish I could have been there. Thank you for sharing that link!

Very cool. Also thanks to @troubleinharlem and @BarnacleBill too for the posts and links. I was living in Portland, Oregon when Mt. Helens became active and through all her huffing and puffing, through all the eruptions, including the big one on May 18, 1980 and afterwards. I thought that was an awesome thing to be able to witness, but watching an island be born? Wow!

Thanks for that!

I had no idea that an island could be born that quickly!

If you were present when it happened and it was in international waters, could you claim the island for yourself?

Would I need a flag?

@Mat74UK Interesting question. A flag would be good; an army would probably be better. I would also suggest you be careful trying to plant a flag on an island that is in the process of being formed by an active volcano. Just exercise caution.
