A brief enquiry: how do Orcs multiply?

Asked by veileddarkness (96points) October 10th, 2010

I believe it was Saruman who made a reference to the multiplication of Orcs, yet on contemplation, some complications have arisen:

1) I have not noticed any discernible genders.
2) They do not seem the most nurturing of creatures, thus meaning survival of small Orcs would be a tough feat.
3) It seems it would be of high inconvenience for them to have to maintain a constant production line as in Isengard with Saruman’s hybrids.
4) Were such matters not intended to bother people?

Tolkien couldn’t think of everything. Is that what you wanted to hear? That authors aren’t perfect?

Or do you want us to speculate on how it could happen? Or are we supposed to make up a wild fantasy?

Personally, I think there is a humongous queen orc hidden deep in some cave and she pumps out orc after orc, like a queen ant. The orcs are “born” just about completely adult.

Orcs and Uruk-Hai are different creatures entirely. Uruk-Hai were first created by Sauron as basically super-orcs, then Saruman created his own – Treebeard speculated they were a cross between Orcs and Men, so the Uruks could withstand sunlight and stand up straight.

According to the Silmarillion, Orcs are either Elves that Morgoth twisted to his own design, or Morgoth’s own sorry attempt to create his own race (like Ulmo created the Dwarves). It would stand to reason that they would breed in the same manner as Elves – which is the same manner as Men. As far as their upbringing, they probably didn’t learn to be cannibalistic battle-fodder in etiquette classes at boarding school. Elves do not die unless they are killed or poisoned, so that would explain how the little ones survive such rough young life.

Thank you, by the way, I’ve never thought about this before. ^_^

Orcs are re-animated dead people. They are replenished by people getting killed in war.

Orcs have to multiply by memorizing their multiplication tables like everyone else. They find this extremely difficult since they aren’t very bright, and that’s why they’re always grumpy.

@wundayatta Forever the image of an oversized orc spewing out reams of new, liquid coated and growling mutant produce engraved in my mind. I thank you. :P
