Do Doc Martens run small, narrow, etc.?

I’m looking at a pair of Doc boots, and “Ellen” style flats to add to my Christmas list, and I’ve never owned a pair. My foot is a size 6, but depending on the shoe, I have to go up to a 7 sometimes to fit because I have a wide foot. Should I be asking for a 6 or a 7?
