Choosing a Spanish keyboard layout for Windows?

Asked by shared3 (921points) October 13th, 2010

Hi guys! So I want to add a keyboard layout for Windows 7 but I’m bewildered by the number of different keyboard layouts.

1. Are the “Latin American” keyboard layouts for all the different regions (ex. Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, etc) all the same? As far as I can tell, they are, but then why are they organized like this? What’s the difference than between choosing Spanish (Argentina) and Spanish (Bolivia)?

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of
a. the Latin American layout
b. The Spanish layout
c. The Spanish Variation layout

3. Which of these layouts are most popular? Does this vary by country/region? What do computers come with by default in Latin America? Spain?

A lot of little questions; thanks for reading all of them!

I have a Spanish keyboard, and as far as I can tell, there are only a few very minor differences from english ones. To the right of my ‘L’ key I have ’Ñ’. and a couple of symbols are in different places. So I imagine the difference between one kind of Spanish to another is insignificant.

Personally, layouts dont matter that much to me, It can be a little annoying when i go to press @ and instead get ” and things like that. but otherwise there is no big change.

I would imagine, that any differences between different spanish keyboards are very minor, seeing as the language is always more or less the same. I talk to spanish friends in all kinds of countries, and the little differences are always self evident. e.g. they say “ahorita” i say “ahora” and so on.

If i where you, i would just pick one at random and stick with it. the subtle differences are too small to invest the time it would take to learn it.

I have been in situations where I had to use a Spanish keyboard. They are great if you are typing in Spanish and don’t mind using ”,” instead of ”.” when typing long numbers. They are extremely difficult if you are a touch typist and are trying to answer English email.
