How can you tell if a bald spot in your hair will never grow again ?

Asked by Scarlett (915points) October 13th, 2010

Just wondering if anyone call tell if the hair on your head will ever grow back, if it has been thinning ?

I have hair thinning on both of my temples, but it’s not completely bald. I still have some baby hairs there, and this doctor told me that my hair will grow back again.

But the skin looks smooth and I don’t really see any new hairs popping out, does this mean that the hair will never grow out again ?

I know it’s going to take time for my hair to come back, if it does, I was just wondering if there are signs that it wouldn’t grow again.

Note – The hair has been thinning over time, for about 1 year. I’ve been really stressed out, and they found nothing abnormal with me medically, so the doctor thinks it’s all from being stressed out.

From some of your posts, you are going through an extremely stressful year, so that could be the reason as your doctor has said. Hopefully, once your life gets back on track you will see your overall health will get better and your hair will start growing again. In the meantime, you could start taking a vitamin meant for hair growth such as biotin.

I’m taking biotin right now :)

It’s only been about a month now since I’ve taken them, so I haven’t seen anything improve yet.

I think it’s all from stress thanks

I think hair follicles atrophy when the hair is lost for good. If your doc had a look and they are producing hair cells, or are healthy and not atrophied, you’ll be good to go.

(this is another symptom of too much cortisol in the system from stress or a low-carbohydrate diet)

Check your hormone balance—they can do this with a blood test. Stress can definitely cause problems, but hormones can too. If something is wrong, it most likely can be fixed—but you have to know if this could be the cause.
