not really, all it is, is access to more apps and games from third parties. jailbreaking wont “ruin” your iphone or anything. and if you ever want to go back to the regular iphone, you can just restore in itunes.

The ultimate downside is that the program could hurt your iPhone in the long run. And once you do it you lose your apple warranty and they won’t fix your problems. For instance my friend broke his phone by accident and the apple store replaced it for free even though he didn’t by a real warranty or anything. But once you’ve jailbroken it, the apple store won’t help you out.

oh, and with the whole warrenty thing people are saying, if anything goes wrong, you can just restore it in itunes before you take it to get repaired, but most of the time apple doesnt really care.

it voids your warranty. possibly brick your phone.. but its pretty cool to have all of the extra stuff on your phone. I’ve been too afraid to do it to mine, and since the app store on the iPhone releases in June, I’ve decided to wait.

I’ve found my iPod Touch was hugely unstable when I jailbroke it, but there are no long term outcomes from the jailbreak (apart from voiding your warranty, but you can just restore it and make it look like an un-jailbroken phone).
I would wait until June, because of the 3rd Party Apps made by the unofficial developers, most are really crappy and poorly designed. Some are great, but the novelty wears off. At least with the App store you get one thing software really needs: Quality Control.

if it is unstable then you must have downloaded a wrong app. I downloaded a wrong app for my iphone and made it very unstable. After i uninstalled it it worked fine.

I have to do this. There’s a search box at the very top right of this site. Just look what happens if you search for iphone and jailbreak.

sorry, but I just gotta ask. How is it highly unstable? I have my iPod touch jailbroke, and it seems to run fine to me.
