Do you ever worry you may be accumulating too many needless material possessions?

Asked by losanjealous (44points) October 14th, 2010

Are you comfortable with the number of purchases you make?
Do you ever feel the world is manufacturing needlessly?
Would you become worried or anxious if you were to be separated from some, or all, of your material possessions?

No.

I thin things out several times a year, and detatched from ‘stuff’ a long time ago.

While I enjoy my house and it’s decor a lot I am not overly attached to any ‘thing.’

More ‘stuff’ = more clutter, dust, maintainance.

No, every once in awhile I have a giant yard sale and get rid of everything I have – except my craft supplies.

I very, very rarely shop for anything that I don’t need. I’m a little bit frugal. Or a lot frugal, perhaps.
Of course there are items that have sentimental value, or even items that I just like for whatever reason. I wouldn’t want to have those items taken away from me.. but they are just things. I regularly go through what I have and give it away to someone (or a charity) that needs it, or we have garage sales, ebay, craigslist.. whatever. I hate having too much stuff. Gets in the way of thinking, I swear.

I have a problem throwing away even my most trivial doodles. I’ve always had separation anxiety from my art. I’ve had one sketchbook stolen in my entire life and it still upsets me when I think about it. My art could never be left behind. I have four LARGE boxes/containers full of sketchbooks from the last 15 years or so, since I was a kid.

I also can’t get rid of my dog’s things at the moment. She was my childhood pet and she died six months ago. I don’t know if I’ll ever throw out anything. I’m certainly keeping her collar.

I don’t like the amount of crap I’ve accumulated, I’m currently working through all of my belongings, from childhood to present and donating or trashing them. I need to downsize first for my own sanity and second for space reasons as I’m hoping to attend William & Mary in the next year or so.

I don’t like how much I buy, and can’t really afford it so I’ve been cutting myself off. I’m allowed one ‘major’ purchase until late January – a winter coat.

And yes, I worry about how much we produce. Sometimes when I see figures on what humans manage to make in a year, in a day even I feel sick.

Nope, I’m always getting rid of things. I theorize that I have an essentially constant amount of “stuff” (except for classical CDs; those just keep comin’). As new things come in, old things get thrown out or given away. I do not like to have crap lying around that I don’t use.

I have a house with a full basement and a 30×40 ft barn. I do not purchase many things and the things I do buy, I need. That said I have a hard time throwing out any hardware that might be used in a project.
I never met a screw I didn’t like. They get saved in coffee cans. I like coffee cans too.

No, not at all. What’s to worry about? I’m not THAT attached to any material thing that i’d go to ruins if i lost it. It’s my living “possessions” that are most important to me. I enjoy my material things, otherwise i wouldn’t have bought them. And what i have too much of, i’ll get rid of if and when needs be. I like having material things. :)

Edit: having said that, i don’t easily throw away things that i have, and what’s worse, most of them are kind of useless, sort of sentimental thingies. That annoys me a little because i accumulate things like that in my cupboards that are just using up space. I also hoard lots of things that i suspect i may be able to make something crafty out of it, but that’s another story and those things can be useful. So, the only annoying things about material stuff for me is that i tend to keep certain useless little things because i can’t get it over my heart to throw them away.

I like my stuff and I have too much of it.

It depends on what you’re talking about. I only buy stuff that has a function. I never bought random decorative pieces, or had an extra of something laying around. The basic setup is a bed, dresser, tv, and computer.

I’m comfortable with the number of purchases I make right now, but I do feel horrid about the amount of stuff I’ve accumulated over the years. Moving out of my dorm room last year and having to pack everything up really shocked me at how much I could fit into a single room.

I definitely feel that the world is manufacturing needlessly. I don’t think anyone could argue against that.

And yes, there are definitely some possessions I’d be upset to part with, but they are in a minority.
