I recently learned an acquaintance died while practicing it. He was in his 40’s. Apparently little is known about it because of its secretive nature and the fact that most practitioners are rarely found out until they push the limit and die. Do you know anyone who does it? What are your thoughts on the subject?

I wouldn’t try it and don’t know anyone who’s told me they do it. The most I know is when they are investigating it in a tv crime show. So it sounds too dangerous to me for an orgasm.
We had an employee who died doing it. Everyone in the small town thought that had hung himself and they were asking why, why, why. Then, the truth came out. Nobody wanted to talk about it publicly. That was in the 90s. Apparently, he didn’t have someone there to make sure he didn’t choke off. Dangerous stuff. Not worth it, in my opinion.
I’ve practiced it with a lover but doing it alone is just stupid.
I’m sorry to hear about your friend. It’s a very dangerous thing to do, and so ‘underground’ that people generally practice it alone, which makes it doubly dangerous. I’ve heard of a few cases in the past that were labeled suicide, but may have been accidental sexcapades.
@augustlan – the reading I have done on the subject says just that, it is more prevalent than one would think because so frequently labeled as suicide. I can’t imagine it! Thanks all for your answers. I was hoping more would say they do it and why.
Endangering your life for the sake of sexual excitement? Sounds really stupid to me.
@xxii – well I am inclined to agree, but apparently it is quite widespread particularly in the ages 12 – 25 in males. It continues to be practiced into old age but practice makes perfect and if they survive the age bracket shown, they usually survive to die of other causes. It supposedly started in the 16 or 17th century when it was prescribed as a cure for erectile dysfunction. This conclusion arrived at because men would often have an erection and sometimes ejaculate when they were hung. I thought for sure there would be some practical knowledge of it in fluther.
@rooeytoo – 12 to 25?? When I was 12 I barely knew the details of standard intercourse. I guess people are just getting more and more experimental.
@xxii – I was surprised myself but that is what this particular research paper maintained. And it said some as young as 9 were involved in it. Hard to believe!
