What are the best options for safely disposing of old computers?

Asked by Pied_Pfeffer (28141points) October 17th, 2010

I have an old PC computer from the late ‘90s. How does one get rid of it without risking any personal information that might be stored on it? Is there any hope of having someone recycle it so that it doesn’t get tossed in a dump?

cashforlaptops.com—Don’t expect to get the amount they give you in the estimate though. They usually end up shorting you 40–100 bucks

@ISUTF224 Thank you for the link. It is a desktop and a tower CPU, and this site looks like it is only for laptops. (I should have specified that in the details.) I’ll give them a call though. Have you used them?

@Pied_Pfeffer Yes, I sent them an old HP laptop. They gave me an estimate of $160, but when they received it they said there were touch pad and key pad wear and I only got $100 out of the deal.

Our local electronics recycler will destroy all data for a small fee. You might want to check with yours.

Check with your city and county, many have electronic waste programs.

remove and destroy the hard disk drive from the computer and erase all the info from the monitor with soap and a rag…. and the rest is just junk to be recycled.

@tigerlilie Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, I do not have a license to use explosives and would prefer to live in my home than a jail cell. I’ve considered a sledgehammer, but both options would defeat the purpose of disposing of them in the most sustainable way possible.
