I borrowed a humidifier from a friend and have some questions?

It’s a basic, small humidifier (round, from Walgreens, no buttons/controls) ... I cleaned it thoroughly and have it plugged in next to my bed.
1. Can I leave it on all night?
2. The kitties are intrigued, will it hurt them?
3. Should I add some peppermint essential oil to it or just plain water (I don’t have distilled water at home)?
