How can I sync certain folders between my two computers?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19059points) October 19th, 2010

I’d like to be able to sync certain folders between my desktop and laptop, like my pictures and my documents, once a day. Is there a way that I can do that? A program that does that for me, perhaps (nothing I have to pay for)?

If you’re looking at sharing files between computers easily (and inexpensively) you can try the free application, Drop Box. Just search Google for Dropbox and it’ll be the first result. It comes free with 2GB of shared storage, and you can access it from any computer, anywhere with the internet.

I’m sure there are a number of similar online-storage applications that may fit what you need. Alternatively, you could get into mapped drives in Windows and more in depth networking. I suggest taking a look at free online shared storage to see if that does the trick though.

@adambate I have DropBox, but I’m really looking for the syncing part, not just the sharing.

You can sync with Dropbox. You just need to use it as the folder. If you change things in the folder while offline, it’ll update the account (and other computers if they are connected) when you connect.

Instead of having a local folder and sharing it on the dropbox. Move the folder you are looking to sync – pictures, documents, etc. onto the dropbox folder and edit from there.

I use rsync to do this and more. But it isn’t easy to use. There are Windows clients that make it easier but I haven’t used any of them so I am reluctant to recommend one.

@adambate You only get 1 or 2 gigabytes for free with dropbox.

ah, I skimmed over the “free” requirement in your description

So, I’m sorry, but I’m confused as to why Dropbox isn’t working. It will sync between computers, i have it syncing between my home desktop and work laptop, with all my documents and a few other folders. I also currently have 3.25GB, though that’s because of roping friends in. Even without referring you can easily get 2.5 gigs by doing the silly tutorial (you start with 2gigs and finishing the tutorial gives you an extra .5). Is that just not enough space?

Windows Live Mesh

If you sync between computers (without storing files in the cloud) there is not a limit. Plus you get 5GB cloud storage like Dropbox.

Works with Windows and Macs.

@BhacSsylan No, it’s not enough space.
