Asked by smokeweedeveryday (579points) October 21st, 2010

I want to get into skating and don’t know what board to buy. I know there are a lot of great ones, but dont know which one to choose.
Any suggestions?

Years and years and years ago, Grindking was a good brand for trucks . . .

Alien Workshop for the deck. . .

Venom wheels . . .

That should give you a decent start if you want to build your own setup. This was about 15 years ago though . . . don’t know if they’re still the ish.

Check this out just as an illustration to show that really, there are so many options that are all good, it all depends on your style and preference.

To start out with, since it sounds like you know little to nothing about it, I’d recommend going with a cheap “complete,” to see if it’s something you are actually into. B/C it can get really custom, and a lil’ pricey. If you still like it after you’ve ripped all the skin off your knees and palms, you’ll learn what stuff you like . . .

Also. . . no matter what route you choose, I’d recommend installing risers. It makes the learning curb a little easier/more comfy.

Whatever is the most expensive. You pay for quality after all. It’s wise to invest in some good quality gear if you want it to last. Some good brands are Almost, Girl, Alien Workshop…
