What Isn’t Broadcasted From Merrie Monarch: 2010 Edition

The men of Ke Kai O Kahiki have just walked off stage with another first place win. The broadcasting cameras are turned off & the judges pack up their things & head home. Now…the real magic begins.

Hawaii Jake walks up onto the large platform stage. Another gentleman sits off to the side with a pahu between his legs. The gentleman starts to chant & pound out a wonderful beat on the pahu. Hawaii Jake begins with a Holo step & then into a Hela & Ka’o. He then gets the crowd cheering with his Uehi. The beat on the pahu becomes faster as Hawaii Jake begins to move about the stage. This is when the dance takes its unique twist.

The crowd moves in & encompasses the entire stage. Hawaii Jake continues to hula as one by one, each member of the crowd chants out their question. Without missing a beat or Kaholo, Hawaii Jake answers every question. This Dance-Q&A doesn’t stop until every question of the night has been answered. When the final question has been answered, the pahu goes silent & Hawaii Jake takes a bow. The crowd begins to throw a rare hybrid of flower petals on stage. The petals of the Lurve Habiscus. At the end of the night, Hawaii Jake is crowned first place as the Crowd Favorite, once again.

What makes this years Merrie Monarch so special is that tonight….tonight Hawaii Jake has accumulated 10,000 petals of the Lurve Habiscus flower. Every year he does his dance for the Lurve of the people, not for the cameras & the judges. And he wouldn’t want it any other way.

A crowd favorite.

A class act.
