Why do my dishes smell?

Asked by Lboom1 (1points) October 24th, 2010

After I take the dishes out, even though they are clean and dry, the dishes smell horrible! I never put dishes in with actual food on them, and i clean the dishwasher. any advice on how to prevent this?

what dishwasher products are you using in it to clean the dishes?

I use Finish jet dry four in one tablets. The weird thing is that my dishwaser itself doesn’t smell at all. It’s just the dishes after they are cleaned.

what kind of smell? sewage? rotted garbage? it might be coming from your drain. Chemical? it might be the detergent. do you have hard water, or is it well water? might be the water interacting with the detergent

try putting baking soda down the sink drain, also, pour a kettle full of boiling water down the sink drain, clear out the gunk in the drain.

Youre right, it could be the water.. but the dishwaser is separate from my sink. It’s the kind that you have to hook up to the sink with a hose.

Perhaps the dishes aren’t dishwasher safe and the heat from the drying cycle bonds the finishing agent to them? Have you experimented with different wash settings?

How long does the odor last after you take the dishes out?

Load the dishwasher and the dishes that smell and when it goes into the main wash cycle, open it and add one cup of bleach. This will take care of the smelly dishes and really clean your dishwasher. Best I can tell, when I have experienced this, raw egg was the problem. I beat an egg to scramble and put the bowl into the dishwasher. The egg dries on the bowl and the bottom of the dishwasher. It helps if you rinse the dishes before putting in the dishwasher but this is redundant and wastes water. So, best thing is load it and use a single rinse cycle if it isn’t full enough to run a full wash cycle.

Thanks! Will definitely try that : )

Laboom, I just read the thread and see you are using a portable dishwasher. If you connect and disconnect the DW frequently, the possibility of mold increases greatly because you have wet hoses that are exposed to air. So, use bleach often during the wash cycle to keep a check on mold as well as what I mentioned in my first answer. Good luck to ya.
