Help me to understand this joke?

But getting back to the original topic… @TheOnlyNeffie is correct about the play on words, unfunny as it is to most of us. But @troubleinharlem, I know how frustrating it is not to get a joke. I’ve read The New Yorker magazine for years, well known for its jokes, and just week I spotted one that I swear made no sense whasoever. I think he “art” of cartoon writing is becoming lost in our snark-laden society.

When I first read this joke “A mushroom walks into a bar. The bartender says, ‘Hey, get out! You’re not welcome here!’ The mushroom says, ‘Why not? I’m a fun guy.’” I had no idea what to make of it. It didn’t make sense until I asked a co-worker and read it out to him.

So, when in doubt, sound it out.
