How can I specify the page name for Twitter and Facebook sharing buttons on front page of website?

Asked by brotherhume (373points) October 27th, 2010

I have a duplicate of my latest blog post on the index page of my website. For the permalink blog entry there are Facebook and Twitter share and “like” buttons that share the post title when clicked. On the homepage, if I share the post, the shared tweet or Facebook post displays the title of the homepage. How can I change it to the post title without specifying the URL for the plugins on the homepage every time I write a new post?

I know what you’re talking about and have had a bit of experience designing a system like the Facebook and Twitter ones for a site I co-developed. Here’s an example of how you do it on our site.

Essentially the trick is to add attributes to the URL that the user is being directed to, but you’ll have to check with each site as to how it works.

Edit: It turns out this isn’t the way it works anymore – they’ve both gone to javascript objects. You can still do it the other way, but you won’t get the dynamic features of the Facebook/twitter buttons. As far as I can tell this information should be obtained by the site automatically. All I can suggest is that you investigate the Facebook openGraph protocol because that seems to be related to the Like button in some way. Sorry I can’t be more helpful…
