What's wrong with my mouth?

Asked by nikipedia (28072points) April 2nd, 2008

I have this weird pain in the very back of my mouth on my gum. It doesn’t hurt unless I’m chewing or bite down on it hard. It feels kind of like a cut. Is it possible I bit my own gum? Could it be a wisdom tooth coming in? Has this ever happened to you?

Have you been eating a lot of citrus lately? I get something similar to what you describe from too many acidy foods. Sometimes I get a little cyst form from it, and it’s quite painful.

How old are you? It could be your wisdom teeth. Do you remember eating something like chips and feeling a pain back there while chewing? You could have just abraded your gums a bit. Try not chewing on that side for a bit and rinsing your mouth with warm salt water a few times a day and it should start to feel better soon.

Do you have a fever? When u look at the back of your throat in the mirror do u see anything white on the sides? Are you coughing anything up and if so what color? Are you having nasal drainage? How long has this been going on for?

I had something similar to that. Dentist said it was from the Big Red gum I was chewing. I chewed it nearly all day every day. The sore spot(s) healed up in a few days and never came back. However I swore off the Big Red brand. Dentist it was particularly strong.

So it may be from something you are eating a lot of on a regular basis. Good luck.

Re: as Lee 27 wisely mentions; look at the back and sides of throat in a mirror w. a flashlight. If you see white spots, go immediately for a throat swab; may well be strep throat.

Are you young enough to get your last 4 wisdom teeth?

if you think its a cut, just drink some vinegar or lemon juice.

Oh jeepers. I eat a lot of acidic foods. I’m 23 which I think is still in the danger zone for wisdom teeth? I can’t feel anything back there—just a sore spot with a little dent/hole kind of. No fever or funny stuff. Been going on for a few days.

Sounds like wisdom teeth to me.

Try rinsing with some warm salt water to see if it calms down. If that doesn’t help and the pain persists, you might want to see your dentist. The added information of a dented hole does make it sound more like a wisdom tooth. But it’s still not a bad idea to see your dentist. Alot of people don’t have enough room for them to grow in porperly, and they need to come out. I hope you feel better soon.

I have had the same thing going on myself for the past month or so, and just last week, one of my wisdom teeth broke the surface. So I’ll agree with the wisdom tooth assessment.

You may want to ask your dentist if it would be prudent to have them removed, sometimes wisdom teeth can cause problems, even if not impacted.
