Is this number of Halloween spooks unheard of?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) November 1st, 2010

Just when I thought that children trick or treating was dead, last night, my thoughts were revived. Wife and I had been out of state. Upon returning home, we turned a corner off a main thoroughfare and ran into six blocks of automobiles at a standstill. What was the problem? Spooks! At least 500 to 600 little trick or treaters were being escorted by their parents, door to door. I heard laughter and I heard screams. A beautiful sight and sound. I was totally amazed at the massive number of costumes that were running across the street and house to house for treats. Halloween is not dead, I told myself. Question: Would an incident, like this, revive your belief that children and parents still believe in celebrating Halloween? Also, how many spooks did you have knocking at your door on Halloween night?

I haven’t doubted that parents and children still celebrate Halloween.
The number of ‘spooks’ never heard that expression for trick-or-treaters was the complete opposite of what you had. NO ONE came to our door on Halloween. Not a single person. I don’t think our street had any of them because my dog wasn’t barking. He always barks at the slightest thing. Weird huh?

I was at my friend’s house last night and we did a count for the first time. 271! We were amazed.

There were quite a bit of kids out around here. I didn’t count, but just from what we saw while walking around, we saw a lot.

We live on a farm, so no trick or treaters for us. We went into town to trick or treat. This is a new town for us since we just moved. We picked an old brick street with 100 yr old homes. I was absolutely amazed at the number of older couples (age 70+) that had decorated their homes very ghoulishly and were handing out treats with a big smile. Halloween is not dead in western Illinois. Lots of children were out.

We had about 20.

We had just over a hundred. I also had over 20 stop and make smores in my fire pit. Parents appreciated the chance to warm up as it got pretty chilly yesterday.

I had a bit more than usual, around a dozen kids in all. But it was disappointing in another way: most of the kids showing up at my door were teenagers (I’m sure that most were high schoolers) in regular street clothes, just out to mooch what they could from the ‘hood. And someone was driving them around to do this. I complied and gave in, just because it’s easier than arguing with them about just walking around for a handout—I didn’t want them to know that they could probably extort candy from us day after day if we all stop to think about “the consequences” (namely, vandalism) if we don’t.

But I did see about 4 – 5 kids with real costumes and masks, so I was happy to be entertained by their appearance and to reward them a little better than the rest.

I think I want to move to @Cruiser‘s neighborhood for Halloween—but I like the rest of the year here well enough that its loss is a small price to pay.

Absolutely none. It’s just not really done in the UK.

Last year: 100
This year: 80 (possibly due to it being a Sunday)

I don’t think trick-or-treating is dying, just that parents are being even more cautious than before.

Here in Utah they went out on Saturday night. Didn’t have anyone on Sunday night.

Sadly, none. It is too far between houses.
At about 7:30, I rang my neighbor’s doorbell with a bottle of Cream Sherry, and a handful of Snickers, Whoppers and Junior mints.
After the Sherry, we had Chambord Raspberry Liqueur they had on the shelf for a year or two. Delicious. I slept well.

I had a whole two trick-or-treaters. And they came together. It was sad, really. On the upside, I did get to see my infant granddaughter, dressed up in her adorable lady bug costume! She didn’t ask for any candy, though. Of course, she can’t talk yet. ;)
