Who are your favourite British actors & which roles do you rate as their best?

Asked by ucme (50047points) November 3rd, 2010

Yeah being a Brit this may be slightly insular of me, but i’m interested nontheless. You may choose from the past or indeed the present. Obviously a ton of possibilities I know. I feel confident however that the cream will rise to the top. So, give it your best shot & impress the hell out of fellow movie buffs. Thanks in advance.

Hugh Laurie in everything BUT “House.” Not that it’s a bad show, I just can’t get over the fact that I can’t picture him as an American, despite how effortlessly he pulls of the accent.

Big ups for Patrick Stewart as well.

Colin Firth in “Pride and Prejudice”; Rufus Sewell and Kate Beckinsale in “Cold Comfort Farm”; Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet in “Sense and Sensibility”. Of course, all of them are wonderful in many other roles as well. Stephen Fry is another favorite.

How about Sean Connery in James Bond. Though he is scottish.

ucme's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Functional too. Could work as ballast on board your boat. Or you could even recreate a scene with him while at sea. Using ropes & pullys of course. Think of it as ventriliquism with a twist. Here’s to swimmin with bow legged women XD

My all time favourite Brit actor is Julie Graham who I believe is very underrated. I think she is best known for William and Mary and At Home With The Braitwaites.

As far as more well known actors go I love Maggie Smith, Liz Smith, Dawn French, Stephen Fry, Michael Palin, Emma Thompson, Michael Caine and Julie Walters.

Kardamom's avatar

@Leanne1986 How could I possibly have forgotton Maggie Smith!? She was great in The Divine Wisdom of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, and Ladies in Lavendar and of course Harry Potter.

Of course I love all the guys in Monty Python, especially Eric Idle.

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

I just love Dr. House! He is the a-hole that everyone loves to hate.

Kardamom's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt He’s really good in a minor role in Sense and Sensibility too. You can check out a compliation of his scenes here
