Can spending too much time on the internet be bad for your health?

Asked by crazyandbeautiful (551points) November 4th, 2010

I have had people tell me that spending too much time on the internet (whether it is) playing online games, games on facebook for surfing the web can be hazardous to your health. I was wondering if anyone has info? And if they do please share it with me. Cause I have people saying it has changed people in their lives and had to go to counseling to get better.

If it keeps you from enriching social relationships, productive work, exercise, study, self actualizing hobbies, charitable efforts etc. then yes it is hazardous to your health.
Otherwise, it is just like watching TV.

It can be addicting. Too much of one thing is never good….

and personally, I believe that it keeps you from enjoying reality…

Too much time yes, but it totally depends on what you mean by that. If you never eat, never get up, don’t get enough sleep, you will get sick. I knew a person, before laptops got so poplar who actually sat in a chair that let him avoid going to the bathroom. He had a housekeeper who kept things clean and provided his meals.

I mean just spending a few hours when your off from work playing games. Then getting some things done. And maybe a few hours on the weekend when you have finished all the stuff you normally do. That is what I mean. At your own time.

Well, it is sedentary time, but then so many of us spend our lives in chairs, whether we’re on the internet or not. In any case, that presents a cardio-vascular risk.

Psychologically, I suppose it is possible. It also has psychological benefits so overall, it might be a wash. If you are addicted to some online behavior, and it starts to interfere with other important things in your life, that might be bad for your health. “Too much” time is probably different for everyone. For some, two hours a day might be too much. For others, 12 hours a day might be fine.

Except for not exercising, though, I don’t know of anything that is really much worse about the internet than sitting around reading, or watching TV or playing video games, etc. I think it’s a personal thing. If you don’t like how much you do it, then it’s not good.

no it’s not bad for your health to sit in a chair and work, play games, type, people do these things all day long for decades if not centuries. although LCD, plasma, and LED screens are relatively new.
