Sorry to sound macabre, but are you in love with the idea of death?

Do you love death, ever crave it? Does an early, painless death sound charming to you?

I am not in love with the idea of death. I do not crave it. The idea of dying early does not sound even remotely charming.

And as a close friend has been battling suicide for the past year, this is a very personal issue to me.

The idea of death does not disturb me as much as the idea of immortality. Immortality appears to be something we should crave but the reality would be appalling. At the end of a busy day, the sun goes down, we relax enjoy the evening and then we sleep. That is just the way it is. In its proper time and place it is nothing to be feared.

While, I’m not necessarily looking forward to death, I accept that it’s something I shouldn’t try to escape. As a sitcom once told me, life is short because it’s meant to be spent, used up, and have every drop queezed out of it (like a tube of toothpaste). Moments in life are special because they are rare; wouldn’t living forever diminish that? And in light of this, I’ve decided that since I have to die, I might as well go out in style.

I wouldn’t say that I love or crave death, or even that it sounds charming, because it doesn’t. I’ll admit I am interested and intrigued by death. That being said, it worries me that anyone would want to die. -especially young. There is no romanticism in death or dying.
