What do you think of sports team owners that like to get really involved?

Asked by cockswain (15276points) November 8th, 2010

I’m thinking about guys like Jerry Jones or Al Davis. These guys are on TV way more than other owners, talk to the media a lot, and appear to want to make coaching decisions. Do you think they help or hurt the team?

Russell Crowe owns the South Sydney Rugby League club (or at least a big chunk of it), and he has done wonders for it. I am not a fan of Crowe or the Bunnies, but he has done wonders for them by his cash injections, and rallying supporters.

Yeah, Wade Phillips here. I’d have to say, in light of current events, that hands on owners really suck.

blondesjon, as an ardent packers fan, is sorry to see wade go

What’s the fun of owning a team if you’re not involved? However, being involved doesn’t mean interfering with the professionals managing and coaching the team.

When an owner attempts to get involved with personnel decisions, it is almost always disastrous.

Yeah, hasn’t worked out too well for Jones or Davis (or Mark Cuban for that matter).

Mark Cuban! Another great example. I don’t see how having lots of money makes one capable of making good judgments about how to coach a team.

As a long time Cowboys fan, I couldn’t understand why my older friends were dropping their loyalty to the ‘Boys. Now that I am in my 30s, I see that JJ is the reason this team hasn’t had more success. I am personally PISSED at him at this point. I could go on forever on this

The owners should do what they do best, and let the coaches do what they do best. Period.

Just so you know, I’m a Packers fan and so completely and thoroughly enjoyed the solid, prime time ass-kicking we gave you guys the other day. Kicked your ass so bad, your coach got fired.

crazyivan's avatar

No, no, the coach didn’t get fired for that one. He got fired for losing to my team (the Jags) and it didn’t set in until yours. I mean, there’s no shame in losing to the Packers. They’re a good team. Don’t get me wrong, there will always be shame in losing like that, but it’s nowhere near as bad as making David-freaking-Garrard look like a league MVP for an afternoon…

But more to the point, @iLove Jerry’s problem is that he thought all those Superbowls in the 80s were because of his kick-ass owning. Never occured to him that he just happened to have a great coach running his operation. I’m starting to wonder if he’ll ever realize it.

but it’s nowhere near as bad as making David-freaking-Garrard look like a league MVP for an afternoon LOL!

Jerry Jones is a media whore.
