How can I get water out of my ear after swimming?

Asked by ant (24points) November 9th, 2010

After swimming a week ago my ear hurt. It’s now just very slightly deaf. I expected the water to find its own way out but I think a week is a long time.

I hate to tell you this, but it sounds like you may have picked up an ear infection. I think you had better go to the doctor right away and have it checked out.

Yeah… it should have evaporated by now. Sounds like an infection as @marinelife pointed out.

Next time, if there’s water in your ear after swimming, pour a little rubbing alcohol in there and then turn that ear upside down. That’ll take care of it.

Here’s a trick my sailing coach taught me.

Say there’s water in your left ear. Start by standing straight up, then tilt your head 45 degrees to the left. Lift your right foot off the ground, then carefully hop in place a couple times.

I can’t speak to real statistics, but it works for me all the time. Good luck!

When all else fails, try this: turn the effected ear to one side and tilt toward the floor. stick your little finger inside you ear and move your whole hand up and down, rapidly. the water will break loose.

I had water in my ear trapped by earwax- had to have my ear syringed. Now if I had to pay for that, I would try putting olive oil in my ear, lay on the other side so it can soak right in, then turn on the other side and hope everything drains out. No q-tips.

Put a little alcohol on a q-tip and swish it around your ear—not too deep, of course. The alcohol will help dry it out.

Next time, if you don’t feel like shaking your head a lot, try this trick..

Tilt your head to the side so that the ear with the water in it is facing up toward the sky (head parallel to the ground).

The following has to be done in quick succession: run the tap or dip your fingers in a cup of water, essentially get some water on your fingertips and quickly bring it to your ear, letting drip a drop or two of water into your ear. As soon as the water rolls in, quickly tilt your head over, so that the ear that was up is now down.

The idea is that water has tensile strength amongst its other properties, so the water you purposely drip in will attach to the water in your ear. With the right momentum and timing, the dripped-in water will grab the trapped water and you can get it all to roll out at once.

Having just come back from swimming, and at 52 years of age, my right ear was swishing away. I found “Foolaholic’s” solution and tried it. Stood up turned my head and hopped on one foot. A few mls of fluid fell onto my desk. Miraculous. Thanks I shall spread the word.
