What does it mean to be stupid?

Asked by josie (30934points) November 10th, 2010

I suppose it is pretty easy to define “stupid” as uneducated.
But I know lots of people who dropped out of school, and independently developed their minds to a level that I find intimidating.
On the other hand, in the neighborhood where I lived before my divorce, there was a PhD in Botany who maintained that plants had emotions. WTF!
So what are the criteria that would allow a reasonable person to render against another person the evaluation of “stupid”.

Stupid is being full enough of your own self-righteousness to refer to anyone else as stupid, ignorant, or any variation thereof.

fucking dumb asses

To me in order to say someone is stupid I would have to feel superior in the subject that was being discussed. There is a difference between not being smart and not being intelligent. I dropped out of High School was living on the street for several years of my life. So I am street smart but I can’t do math beyond basic fractions that you learn in 5th grade.. so in that regards I’m stupid. But I’m a system administrator for my job I work with a team thats in charge the computers for a major telecommunications company. In that regards I am not stupid.

To be stupid is not just unlearned. It is to be unable to learn.

Being stupid in my opinion is being reluctant to learn when you have the opportunity to learn.
And plant are living creatures so what’s to stop them from having emotion. It’s a real theory.

Not willing to learn.

Of course there are various types of stupidity. I’m pretty stupid in some aspects, we all are.

@Mrlaconic That is awesome : )

Stupid is when the obvious is ignored or not understood.

“Stupid” is when you don’t agree with me. Duh.

But seriously, to me, there is a distinct difference between “ignorance” and “stupidity”. Ignorance is not knowing. Stupidity is not being able to know or refusing to know. You can be ignorant about something, but not be a “stupid person” as a whole.

Another way to look at it: “ignorant = lacking knowledge”; “stupid = lacking intelligence”. Intelligence is more than just knowledge; it’s the capacity to understand and use knowledge.

Stupid can’t be helped. Plus, it’s all relative. To Einstein, all of us are stupid. Even those with the 130+ IQs…... (OMG! Pun not intended! But I’m laughing anyway!!)

Stupid is all relative.

I always laugh when people say a Sheep or a Turkey or whatever is stupid.

Really?

It’s smart enough to be a sheep or a turkey.

I consider myself a pretty bright individual and a lifelong self taught learner with a very diverse interest base. I know plenty of very educated types that are completely devoid of creativity and extremly close minded and have the EQ of a 4 year old. lol

One person comes to mind, multiple doctorates and other advanced degrees and he is the most whiney assed, emotionally retarded little man I have ever known. haha

@Coloma And at the other end, you could have had a person (especially in the 19th century) who hadn’t had a lick of schooling, but improved upon the things he’d learned just by being alive. A person who was instinctively intuitive…

@Dutchess_III

Exactly!

There are many levels of intelligence.

A good example is a close friend of mine.

She speaks very well but has horrible writing & spelling skills, an area I am fairly strong in.

She often asks me to help her compose writing tasks.

BUT…. she has the most freakin’ AMAZING sense of direction.

Not one of my strengths. lol

We traveled in Asia last year and I was blown away at her navigating complex subway systems and multiple transfers during our many excursions.

Jesus…I would have been lost for days without her! lol

@Coloma Long time no see! (I was Val123, BTW) Hi!

I think all the levels of intelligence are relative….If you take two people with the same IQ, and one is raised in the interior of Africa, with NO experience with modern technology, his or her new inventions will be just as impressive as those of a privileged American Harvard graduate who creates new inventions based on the experience and knowledge of generations before them. Some one person figured out the value of a wheel and how to make the shape work for us. Some one person figured out the value of fire. Some*one* figured out the value of….electricity. :)

The perception of stupidity requires the suspension of all benefits of doubt that the person in question might otherwise be entitled to….in other words, a level of ignorance or under appreciation for all that person has encountered and had to deal with his/her whole life. Stupid is as stupid does but who is really to blame??? Them or your perception of them??

There’s a guy at work with a college degree with a pretty easy job he’s been doing for like 5 years. He constantly needs to be retrained, sometimes even by people that he trained himself. You show him something, and he just doesn’t remember it for more than a few months. Simple shit too, like the theory of how the non-complicated machine he runs works. Always fucking stuff up, making gradual changes to important parts of the process that cause failures.

He is stupid.

I think it’s the refusing to learn, but the always spouting off all their non-knowledge to everyone that has to listen that makes me call someone stupid. Of course, everyone is smart in some things and not in others. If I insist I know better than a doctor about how to take an appendix out, that makes me stupid.

Stupid is when even I can take advantage of you without even thinking about it.

Just look at me! Got it?

Stupid is a stupid does! I’ve no idea what that means, but it’s an answer….....okay a stupid one, but an answer nontheless :¬)
