How many lungs does a human have ?

Asked by superjuicebox (383points) November 13th, 2010

I’m having a discussion with my friend and she says her doctor says 4, but I can swear that we learned that we have 2 in school. Can someone please settle this ?

We have one set of lungs, which is two lungs, technically.

Yeah, we definitely have two lungs.

I think most of us stop at two.

We’re born with two, but people can operate on one. Tried to see if there are any disorders that result in more than two lungs, and no luck there.

Technically its possible in the case of a parasitic twin but the child would most likely be stillborn or die shortly after birth.

Only one if you’re Don Imus.

Really? Her doctor says you have 4 lungs? I think it’s time to switch doctors.

Are you sure the doctor didn’t say “legs?” And that it wasn’t a vet?

My grandma always reminds me that for every doctor that finishes first in his class, there’s a doctor that finishes last.
