How often should I clean my hamster's cage?

Asked by Carly (4555points) November 16th, 2010

I have a dwarf hamster named Babo

I usually fully clean his cage once every 10 weeks. Should I clean it more often, or not? If so, what’s a better time frame between cleanings?

I’d clean it every single week, for sanitary purposes. I mean, would you like walking on your feces and urine all the time?

I’m a proponent of cleanliness for all pets, and anyone who’s in my household.

Ewwww. How do you stand the smell? Poor little guy. My daughter had a guinea pig and pine shavings in the cage. She changed them at least once a week, sometimes twice.

I used to operate a Pet Shop and we cleaned them at least once every week. Though there are times they could need it twice or more a week. If you give him anything that is fresh and raw then you should clean it more.

@Trillian I’ve tried giving him baby carrots, but he doesn’t seem to like them. He just runs away. Are there other kinds of food that hamsters prefer?

squirbel's avatar

Have you tried grass? >.>

Carly's avatar

@squirbel not yet. Any kind of grass? I’ll try the stuff that grows in my front yard.

squirbel's avatar

Yeah, take him out there and see if he likes it :D

My daughter used the food from the store and fresh pieces of fruit, apples, etc. But this was a guinea pig, so I don’t know how their digestion may be different. Try google and see if you can find anything online about it.

@Carly Make sure your grass has never been sprayed with anything…
He can have small pieces of scrambled eggs, pecans, toast, raisins, and very small amounts of cheese. Fruit is a pretty good treat, too. We fed the hamsters grapes that were sliced in half at the pet store twice a week, and they loved it. My hamster loved avocado.

Edit: But please, thoroughly clean out the cage every week.. if he’s litter box trained, then you can clean it all every other week while cleaning the litter box every day. if not, spot clean the cage at least every other day.

I’d say two or even three times a week, hamsters stink after a few days!!

Every week at an absolute bare minimum. Not only is it dangerously unhygenic for the hamster to leave it too long, it will also make your room stink. And you too, if you spend much time in the same room as the cage. It’ll be all in your clothes and hair. ~shudders~

You should be able to get dried hamster food (specifically geared and nutritionally balanced towards their needs) from your local pet store :-)

Every day.

Every week at the very least.

Every week is how many times I would clean my hamster’s cage. You could try giving him sliced cheese, sun flower seeds, or food bought at the pet store. I prefer looking for hamster food at Walmart.

lovable's avatar

You should clean it twice a week. You should try sun flower seeds or cheddar cheese. There’s also stores you could go to like Petco or Walmart to get food for hamsters.

I think you should change the cage at least every 2 or 3 days. I have 2 teddy bear hamsters and they stink after 2 days.
