Anyone has success with mixing your own perfumed lotion?

Asked by longtresses (1334points) November 16th, 2010

Perfumed lotion is very expensive. I wonder if anybody has experience successfully mixing their own perfumed lotion.

For example, can I just by Coco Chanel and pour it into drugstore non-scented lotion? Would that work? Would the lotion grease destroy the smell, etc.? How about the longevity of the finished creation?

I know nothing about chemistry. I would appreciate any experiences. Thanks!

It’s much better to use essential oils to fragrance perfume. Regular perfume is formulated to be sprayed on, and perfumed lotion is formulated to be spread on – neither is just pure scent. Plus, how you’d get the bottle open is beyond me, unless you’re going to break it, but then most would just spill all over the place…

You’re better off creating your own scent, or just buying their lotion.

I have often done it and it seems to work okay. I just spray the perfume into the lotion bottle. I also love the smell of coconut oil so I pour that into the lotion. Only problem with that is the oil and lotion often will separate so it is best to shake it before you squirt it out.

It’s more complicated than you think. The separation @rooeytoo talks about is because certain materials don’t mix well. (oil and water, alcohol and oil) If you want, tell me what perfume or scent you’re trying to mix into a moisturiser and I’ll send you some websites with ingredients and tutorial to make your own, or some suggestions. I have some experience with cosmetics formulation.

@longtresses I tried it and it wouldn’t stay mixed for more than 30 seconds because of the whole oil/water/alcohol thing @cazzie mentioned.

@papayalily That makes sense..

@cazzie Thank you so much! I have a few, hopefully it’s not too much..
* Versace – Bright Crystal
* DKNY – Be Delicious
* CK – Eternity and others..
* Estee Lauder – Pleasure
* Clinique – Happy

You can make ‘like’ fragrances by buying fragrance oils with similar scents. The trick is, they’re OILS, not water/alcohol mixtures that cologne is.

That being said you could always try this: http://soap-queen.blogspot.com/2008/11/gift-series-lotion-tutorial-from.html and try adding a bit of your perfume instead of the fragrance oils.
