How many of you have heard of John of God and if you have what do you think about him?

Asked by Summum (5514points) November 18th, 2010

When I went home yesterday Oprah Winfrey was on and I watched a program about John of God. He is a farmer and people are coming to him from all over the world to be healed. She had a Medical Doctor on the program that went and watched John help people and the Doctor’s life what changed. If you believe that John is healing people where do you think that comes from?

Placebo effect. I don’t believe God, whatever it may be, would directly affect our lives in such a manner as these “miracles.” If we are meant to have faith in God, then there is no need for such miracles to happen because faith is belief absent any proof. If God wanted to prove existence to us, on the other hand, then there are many ways to do so that are better, clearer, and less attention-seeking than this.

GA @iamthemob. I suspect that John of God, and other mediums and faith healers, are not so much healing, or channelling God, as they are inspiring people. I’m sure John of God is charismatic, and people like charisma, they want what charisma offers. And inspiration can be a powerful thing.

I saw two people on Oprah who said that the experience changed their lives. I found it very interesting to listen to what they experienced. John invites any doctor from anywhere to come and see what he does.

I had never heard of him until just now but the news has not excited me.

There have been hundreds before him and will be hundreds after him.

Neither prayer nor faith healers nor new-age mystics ever healed anything that couldn’t have cured itself on it’s own by chance. When an amputee re-grows his missing limb, then I’l take notice.

I haven’t heard of him before, but I will pay attention to it now.
