What does squid ink taste like?

Asked by squirbel (4297points) November 18th, 2010 from iPhone

I just discovered that people eat squid ink. Among the cultures that eat it are the (Spain) Spanish, Italian, and Japanese; although I am sure there are more.

Is it salty? Tangy?

Can someone describe the flavor for me?

I don’t care for it, it tastes like fishy dirt to me.

So it’s grainy textured? It lacks flavor?

Smart quips don’t paint a picture for me. :( :( :( :( :(

I didn’t say anything about texture, I referred to the taste: if you took some dirt from a flower pot and mixed it with the liquid from a bag of raw fish and tasted it, that’s what squid ink tastes like. No, it’s not grainy.

I agree with @squirbel it really has no flavor.. textured weird, very… chewy

And no it does not taste like chicken :D

I dont remember it really having much of a flavor at all. I never had squid ink on its own but Ive had squid ink pasta many time. (we used it a lot in culinary school cause it gave a nice contrast of colors in dishes. Especially when you get creative) and Ive had squid ink ice cream once. Like I said, both really dont have much of a flavor at all, it was more of just a dye.

I’ve had squid ink pasta. It just tasted like normal pasta, but with an odd purple-ish color.

I love it! On multiple occasions in Spain I ate squid in it’s own ink. It was quite salty, and had a deep seafood flavor. Perhaps previous answerers’ cook’s didn’t do it justice, because I’ve found it to be quite flavorful and quite delicious. Try it sometime! (But prepared well, not a goya can)
