Do you know what you don't know?

Asked by lamerdumbmod (23points) November 19th, 2010

Do you know what you don’t know? Or are you ignorant of your ignorance? For instance, I know that I don’t know Greek, and understand its complexity. I know I don’t understand women.

I know I don’t understand why I feel so strongly about some things that intellectually I shouldn’t care about at all.

I like to think so…but then again, I can’t be sure.

Yes, I know that I don’t know a long list of things.

I am very aware of what a moron I am, It’s very annoying to contemplate just how much I don’t know. The worse thing, is I know that even if I live 1000 years, there will be more I don’t know than do.

I think on some level its healthy to know what you don’t know, but it can lead to low confidence too. For example, I have had computers since I was 4 years old, people tell me all the time they are amazed how much I know about computers, and If i made a list, I could probably fill a million pages with things that I know, from how to load the garfield game on atari ST to how to install things in linux ubuntu, But the list of things I don’t know about computers would be 100 times the size. Because of this, no matter how much I know about computers, I never know enough to feel like I’m an expert.

If I know what I don’t know, does that make me a know it all?

wickedcriket's avatar

Yes. Though it took some time to figure some of those things out. Sometimes new things will pop up and it won’t be apparent at first, but eventually I get it. Having an overall understanding of yourself is probably one of the most important things you could strive for.

@Cruiser – it makes you a paradox.

I don’t know what I don’t know until I know that I don’t know it.

I know I’m aware of stuff I don’t know about. Like I know nothing about human bonding and poodles. I know that I know there is more stuff I don’t know about.. Do you know what I mean? :P

Cruiser's avatar

@iamthemob I did not know that! Now what???

iamthemob's avatar

@Cruiser I don’t know!

Cruiser's avatar

@iamthemob Now that I know I didn’t know that, I guess I am back to being a paradoxical know it all!

I know that I don’t know how to answer this. Knowing, me knowing you….....ahaaaaaahh! :¬)

ratboy's avatar

If I don’t know it, then it isn’t knowledge.

I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AND I NEVER WILL.
I HAVE NO IDEA.
I DON’T WANT TO EVEN KNOW CERTAIN THINGS.
WHAT I DON’T KNOW CAN’T HURT ME!

iamthemob's avatar

@ZEPHYRA – Were you yelling so that what you didn’t know could hear you?

lloydbird's avatar

On some level, yes.
We all do.

ratboy's avatar

I just wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.

Berserker's avatar

I know that I know nothing. Some famous dude said that. I agree.

phoebusg's avatar

Yes, and it drives me crazy. Because I want to know everything – cover my base as best I can. Leads to obsessive book collecting, research article reading and studying.

DerangedSpaceMonkey's avatar

I’m not sure, but I’ll get back to you when I figure it out. LOL

The conversation… you know what you know, you know what you don’t know and you really don’t know what you don’t know… who first discussed this, in book or class?
