How do I clean my electric stove?

Asked by mtirado (137points) November 20th, 2010

I have an electric Hotpoint 4 top stove with a hood, the stove top is enamel and the burners themselves are metal and in a spiral shape.

The burners and underneath are pretty dirty, I tried soaking them in water overnight but got little effect. We are moving soon so I need to get them as clean as possible.

Here are instructions on how to clean the heating elements. For the drip pans underneath, a good soak and a soft brush or scrub sponge should work. If they scratch, replacements are cheap. I’ve seen them for sale at The Dollar Store.

Take the burners out, and soak them. Buy new drip pans at the hardware store to replace the old ones. With the burners out, the top of the stove may lift off. If not, place paper towels under where each burner should go, and soak them with boiling water. Let them sit, then wipe up the gunk. You may have to do this several times to get it clean. Once you do get it clean, put a piece of aluminum foil in there, cover the new drip pans with foil, and replace the heating elements.

To clean the oven, if it is self-cleaning, take your pans out of the oven, wipe out any big spills and clean it for 3 hours. When it’s on clean, the oven will lock and you will not be able to open it until it cools down. If there’s anything greasy in there, it will probably catch fire, and you may get a lot of smoke. Once the oven goes through the cleaning cycle and cools down, there will be a gray ash film inside the oven. This wipes up easily with a wet paper towel.

If for some reason your landlord didn’t put in a self-cleaning oven in the rental property, use Easy-Off oven cleaner; you can buy it at the grocery. Follow directions on the can.

You can buy replacement pans at the dollar store or Walmart if everything else fails.

Hope you get your deposit!

Easy-Off will help with the drip pans too.

What is on the burners? I usually just turn the heat up to high till they turn red and burn off anything that is on them.

As @tigress3681 says, turning the heat up should get rid of anything burnt on the burners.
As for the rest of the cooker I would try diluted vinegar. A simple and cheap solution.

The pans under the burners can be replaced—cheap—get them at Lowes or Home Depot. I wouldn’t spend time trying to clean them. If you don’t want to spend the cash, cover them with foil.
